Bryan Walters is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. Classically trained but at home in a myriad of genres, Walters imparts his distinctive and expressive style in a number of NYC based ensembles. Bryan played trumpet, rapped and composed in PitchBlak Brass Band, a 10 piece Hip-Hop brass band that received critical acclaim from DownBeat Magazine, NPR and The Source Magazine. The group toured nationally and collaborated with hip-hop legend Pharoahe Monch at Duke University, Merkin Concert Hall, and The Blue Note in 2017.
Walters co-leads The Phryg a progressive funk quartet where he contributes electric bass and vocals to an amalgam of shredding guitars, bubbling synths and drums. The Phryg will be releasing their fourth EP, Don’t Be Scared in Spring 2023. In 2019 Bryan co-founded Extra Syrup Horns, a brass band increasingly known for their soulful renditions of throwback 90s hip-hop and R&B classics. ESH made its Blue Note NYC debut in September 2019 and performed at The Metropolitan Museum’s METfest in 2021. This summer Walters debuted his live solo electronic project entitled Duplicate. The music combines Bryan’s ethereal brass playing with growling bass lines and electronic production. Bryan has performed at renowned music venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, The Kennedy Center, Symphony Space, Merkin Concert Hall, Joe’s Pub, Le Poisson Rouge, Brooklyn Bowl and Burning Man.
